The Shelly Gen 4 range has started popping up overseas, and from what we’ve heard, it sounds pretty impressive. While it’s not officially available here yet—and we haven’t had the chance to get hands-on with it ourselves—it’s definitely caught our attention.
So, what’s all the fuss about? Let’s take a look at what we know so far and why we’re curious to see how it stacks up against the current lineup.
Important note: As of now, Shelly Gen 4 devices do not yet have their Australian compliance certification, so they can’t be legally installed or used here. That’s something to keep in mind if you’re tempted to import one early.
What We Expect from Shelly Gen 4
If you’ve used Shelly devices before, you know they’re known for being reliable and affordable. Gen 4 looks like it’s aiming to push that reputation even further. Here’s what we’re hearing so far:
1. Better Connectivity
Apparently, Gen 4 devices will have improved Wi-Fi range and stability, which could mean fewer dropouts and stronger performance overall. If that holds true, it could be a great step up from previous generations.
2. Smarter Automation
Shelly has always been big on customisation, and Gen 4 seems to be doubling down on that. We’re expecting more flexible automation options that make it easier to set up complex routines without overcomplicating things.
3. Familiar Compatibility
Gen 3 devices added KNX-IP support, and Gen 4 adds to this. It sounds like Shelly Gen 4 will continue to work with popular platforms like Home Assistant, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and finally support for Apple HomeKit, Matter, and Zigbee will be added to Gen 4 devices! Increased compatibility is good news for anyone looking at adding Shelly devices to their smart home or building automation ecosystem.
Once there’s movement on availability and Australian compliance, we’ll be sure to let you know. Stay tuned.
